Read full description of the books:At long last, the 24th volume of Negima!. I can't decide where to begin or even how much to say regarding how pleased I am with the direction Akamatsu-san has taken this series. Negi and his students are not only adapting to living in the magical world, but are finding ways to get by that makes this a VERY far cry from the series we started with all the way back in Volume 1. The Ala Alba group now not only has its own airship, but with most of the gang reassembled, we have a fun fighting force set to experience all sorts of interesting adventures. The possibilities!
Negi, now having learned Evangeline's forbidden Magia Erebea, is an absolute powerhouse, and thanks to his use of such dark magic, Eva's presence is felt throughout this volume despite the fact we hardly see her at all. Negi has a chance to try it out on a group of extremely skilled professional bounty hunters before coming face-to-face with the foe we love to hate, Fate Averruncus. Unfortunately, it's not time for the moment I have so greatly been wanting to see... we don't have the pleasure of seeing Negi wipe the floor with this guy. Not yet.
We do, however, get a bit more backstory for Asuna and Jack Rakan, who by now is a little more willing to open up to Negi. Rakan is still an enormous nutball, but getting to see another side of him allows us to relate to him a bit more, which is nice. Seeing Asuna so close to discovering her identity is exciting, but what really puts an interesting spin on it is the one who really brings that information before her so unexpectedly.
There's plenty of humor here despite the rather dark description. Aside from Rakan's antics, we have Chisame's usual dry sarcasm, as well as a bounty hunter named Piao Zi, whose obsession with women's breasts ("LONG LIVE BOOBIES!") makes him one of the most hilarious characters to come along for quite some time. (He even narrates the supplemental notes regarding breasts in the book's bonus section. Makes for fun reading, yes?) Aside from this, the fanservice is really pretty light this time around, but there's not much room for it with all the fighting going on.
I'm quite the sucker for tearful reunions, and this volume doesn't disappoint on that front, either. The plot is thickening in yet more areas, too, as Tosaka is starting to piece together "Nagi"'s connection to everything... and Fate seems to be ready to make a rather big move. Of course, what he wants to propose to Negi is something our hero just won't stand for, so we may have a major battle heading our way in the next volume!
Once again, I am enormously entertained. Negima! has become one of my favorite series ever, and great installments like this are the reason why. Anxiously awaiting volume 25!
Read information about the authorKen Akamatsu (赤松 健, Akamatsu Ken, July 5, 1968 -) is a Japanese mangaka from Tokyo.
In his teenage years, Akamatsu failed the entrance exam to Tokyo University, and applied for Film Study instead (it is speculated that this is where he got the idea for Love Hina). Eventually, he became famous as an illustrator featured in Comiket (short for Comic Market, a comic convention bi-annually held in Japan). He used the pen name Awa Mizuno (水野 亜和, MIZUNO Awa). Akamatsu, still in college, then proceeded to win the Weekly Shonen Magazine award twice. His "A Kid's Game for One Summer" was awarded the coveted 50th Shonen Magazine Newcomer's Award soon after he graduated.
After a big hit with A.I. Love You, he finally made a grand success with his new manga, Love Hina. The series appeared in Weekly Shonen Magazine and has been collected in eleven volumes (with fourteen volumes in total), which have sold over 6 million copies in Japan, and received the Kodansha Manga Award for shōnen in 2001.
Akamatsu had added elements of his own life experiences to the story, and this was said to have induced a unique feeling to the manga especially for Western readers, whose lack of familiarity with Japanese culture for the most part added to the effect. The series, published in America in 2002, was especially well received in many overseas countries - Akamatsu was surprised that even foreign readers found Love Hina to be "cute" and to their liking.
He is now married to his wife 'Kanon' Akamatsu, who was previously a singer/idol. He is currently working on his latest manga series, Negima!: Magister Negi Magi, which is his longest running manga so far. Like Love Hina, has also been made into an anime series. A second independent retelling of Negima was made called Negima!?. Both series were produced by XEBEC (Negima!? was produced by SHAFT).
